Helvetica

“Type is saying t

hings to us all the time typefaces express a mood, an atmosphere. They give words a certain colouring.”

Created in the 1950’s by Swiss typographer Max Miedinger, Helvetica now has a worldwide presence and is somewhat of a VIP of fonts. Helvetica is named after the Latin name for Switzerland and is popular among designers for its clean, bold and modern look.

“Type is saying things to us all the time typefaces express a mood, an atmosphere. They give words a certain colouring.”

“Helvetica is this beautiful timeless things.”

“Everywhere you look, you see typefaces but there is probably one you see more than any other one, and that’s Helvetica.”

“It sort of just seems to come from nowhere. it seems like air. it seems like gravity.”

“It’s hard to evaluate it. It’s like being asked what you think about off-white paint. It’s just there and It’s hard to get your head around something that’s that big.”

What is Equality!!?

Equality means “the state of being equal.” It’s one of the ideals a democratic society, and so the fight to attain different kinds of equality, like racial equality, gender equality, or equality of opportunity between rich and poor, is often associated with progress toward that ideal of everyone being truly equal.

Samples of my work

Equality is Fairness

I chose Helvetica because “it’s ubiquitous, it’s like going to McDonald’s instead of thinking about food because it’s there it’s on every street corner.” a font ‘of the people’.

Equality is Equity

The background evokes the real solidity of concrete, anchoring what might otherwise seem like a floaty concept and an unattainable ideal.

Equality is Equivalence

Equality is Balance

My design is inspired by graffiti

My design is inspired by graffiti; an ancient communication in caves from the beginning of the human race to the modern-day art of the streets.
The emphasis on the letter ‘a’~ the middle letter of the word draws attention to the inherent meaning of balance in equality substantiated in life by the seesaw of opposites: rich and poor, men and women, black and white.
Monochromatic, grayscale, and full colour treatments to the typography enhance this sense whilst referencing the diversity of humankind in its universal yearning for equality.
The contrast of softness and grittiness in the image echoes felt experience of hope and suffering, subjugation and aspiration.

Migration

Poster 1: Crossing

#crossing #hope #opportunity #betterlife #peace #future #freedom #mayekabold

Crossing to the promised land. Escaping from death and searching for safe and peaceful shelter. The dark blue of the word MIGRATION reflect the aggressiveness of the merciless  sea. The light blue is symbolic of hope and peace and the red illustrates that death continues to follow the migrants on their hazardous unknown journey.

CANAKKALE, TURKEY – FEBRUARY 28: Irregular migrants, who want to get to Europe through Greece, arrive in coastal, border at Ayvacik district of Canakkale, Turkey on February 28, 2020. Irregular migrants, including women and children, have been heading towards border villages of the countryâs western provinces of Edirne and Canakkale to reach Greece. The movement started at night and grew by the morning. Irregular immigrants also moved to the regions with a coast on the Aegean Sea to cross the Greek islands. Poster 2: Desperation

#crossing #borders #challenge #hope #elderly #children #women #desperation #discrimination #advent #Helvetica

Desperation for hope. It’s an extremely tough, long way similar walking between life and death. Crossing from the sea to the land, from one border to another, in an endless search of peace. Peace can be found in many places but what about our inner peace?

In this poster, I used the letters of the word MIGRATION to represent the different nationality migrants who are crossing countries, desperately looking for a better life. The various sizes of the letters represent the age difference and the colours used, are a gradation of blue and green which show a slow movement.
